Golf for Fitness and Health

Harry Smith earned his bachelor of science in business administration from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, in 1992. He most recently served as CEO of Flanders Corporation, a residential and industrial air filtration products provider. During his time as CEO, Harry Smith grew the company’s earnings from negative territory to over $30 million dollars. Outside of work, he enjoys playing golf.

Golf, a sport widely considered a leisure activity, has surprising potential for fitness and health benefits. The average 18-hole golf course provides between 5 and 8 miles of walking distance per game. Brisk walking between holes, combined with the weight of carrying clubs, provides the benefits of both weight training and cardiovascular activity, leading to improved metabolism and bone strength, increased calorie burn, and better heart health.

Further, the time spent outdoors in a green space can increase vitamin D levels, improve mood, and help with sleep. Finally, as golf is a social activity, it can also improve mental health through a sense of camaraderie with fellow golfers.
